PARANGOTTU NAMBOOTHIRI'S REAL KAILAS VISIT

OM NAMAH SHIVAYA
PARANGOTTU NAMBOOTHIRI'S REAL KAILAS VISIT
----------------------------------------------------------
Long ago in British Malabar there was a Namboothiri whose family name was Parangottu . He was a man of virtue , a born Vairagi ( Someone whose is detached from all the material comforts ) and well
versed in all the Vedas and Puranas . He lived an austere life by renouncing all the material comforts.Soon he left home discarding all his wealth and family to travel in and around the country.
Time passed by, one day he reached a deep jungle .By then he was exhausted by an inexplicable hunger and thirst. He searched the whole forest for food but in vain. At last by god s grace he found an ashram(spiritual hermitage or a monastery) and saw a great sage under Penance. He approached him and begged
to give something satisfy his thirst and hunger as it had been intolerable for him. After providing him with food for his nourishment the Great Sage enquired about his whereabouts. Then he informed sage that he is a Brahmin and all related details. Sage asked him if he had studied Vedas and the Brahmin replied
Yes . Then the Sage told If so, then you should not feel the hunger and thirst, do recite me the Veda the
way u had been taught . Namboothiri start reciting the Vedas. Up on completion the Great Sage replied What you have learned all are mistakes, if u clears this out from your memory I will teach you the Vedas once again. In order to erase it sit towards north direction and recite the same for few days.
Namboothiri followed his instructions and after few days cleared the memory. Then the Great sage started teaching him Veda s from beginning to the end. He taught the Brahmin to chant certain hymn from Vedas in order to avoid hunger and thirst. Thus following his guru s guidelines and practicing yoga the Nampoothiri started living with the Sage in his ashram.
One day two divinities came to Great sage s Ashram, they were talking to the sage ,Nampoothri could hear the conversation but was unable to understand because it was in a non-human language. So when they left he asked the saint regarding those two divinities and their purpose of visit. Then the great sage replied those two divine persons were none other than Shiva Bhutas ( Attendants of Lord Shiva at Mount Kailas ) and since today is Devi Parvathi s Monday fasting , Devi has expressed her desire that he should also take part in the KallKazughichoottu ceremony (Ritual washing of feet of saints and sages)in mount Kailas . Then a deep craving to visit the Mount Kailas aroused in Namboothiri s mind. He revealed his desire to the sage, who responded by saying that now you are not strong enough to do it , Live here for some time more then you will also be capable of and then u can desire for that .
Nampoothiri was not satisfied with this answer instead he insisted up on taking him also along with the sage. At last sage yielded to the Brahmin s wishes up on a condition that after reaching Kailas he won t be looking here and there and will stay quite with his head down all the time. Nampoothiri agreed to do the same.
When it was time to go Sage asked the Nampoothiri to hold his hand and close his eyes. Then they transported themselves to the Mount Kailas and reached there with in no time. There were a lot of sages
present for the ceremony. The feet washing of all those saints have been performed by Lord Parama Shiva himself . In that Parangottu Nampoothiri s feet also washed by the Lord. When the ceremony was over every one sat for the feast . This time Devi Parvathy started pouring water for attendees. The melodious sound of Devi s Anklets made the Brahmin s mind to flicker. Devi was filling the water for each one by one. Finally she approached the Brahmin to pour the water , Namboothiri was sitting with his head down
all the time but he could see Devi s feet clearly. It was very beautiful . He thought to himself that if this Devi s got a feet which is such a breath taking then how lovely will be her face, then I should have a look at it. By thinking this he tried to look up , suddenly Nandi standing behind the Devi emitted a Hum
sound . Up on hearing this Namboothiri fainted and was thrown up .
The next day morning Brahmin regained his consciousness. When he opened his eyes he found himself in a pond. He is unable to identify the place. Then a servant girl came to the pond to clean her utensils.
When enquired her about the place she answered that the pond belongs to the Poomulli mana. Since the
nampoothiri had visited this place even before, he recognized the place. He got up from the pond very laboriously. When he reached the shore he could hear the crying and clamoring from the Mana. He
enquired the servant girl the reason for mourning and she answered that Yesterday night the boy child of the Karanavar( Eldest Brahmin ) of the Mana had died due to a sudden disease. He was only three years old. Now the body is taking for the cremation ground that's why everyone is crying .Up on hearing this nampoothiri went to the Mana. At that time the body of the baby boy was about to be taken for cremation ,Nampoothri told the boy's father not to worry because he can resurrect the boy .
Even though he didn t believe the word s of the Nampoothrir but out of his love towards his son the poor man agreed.
Then Parangottu namboothiri took some water in his hand and started chanting a Mantra(Hymn) and splashed the water to the boy's face. To everyone s surprise the boy opened his eyes. Then twice nampoothri done the chant and splashed the water in to baby s face and now the boy was able to sit right and called achaa (father). It was very surprising and joyous affair for both his father and every one gathered around there. The parangottu namboothiri was familiar to the Karanavar but he could not recognize him at first due to his changed looks as he is having long matted hair now and wore maravuri (clothes made out of the barks of trees). He was seeing him after a very long time. Up on enquiries by the Karanavar Parangottu nampoothiri told him all his life histories , then the elder could remember his face and
believed his stories as genuine. Even though the parangottu nampoothiri did not belong to a prestigious Brahmin family but considering his deep knowledge and divinity that elder has anointed him with a priest position and made him live with
him forever.
