TRIPRANGODE lord Shiva TEMPLE(Triprangode Kalasamharamurthy temple )\

Sree Triprangode lord Shiva temple mentioned in many of the puranas,is situated in triprangode panchayath of tirur taluk. the temple is within 8km from the tirur railway station and 5 km from thirunavaya.
This temple is the famous mahadeva temple in the world . here the god Shiva is in an "Aghora bhavam " .
The orgin of this temple is connected with the legend of lord Shiva saving Markandeya from death. Markandeya agreat devotee of lord Shiva was destinated to die at the age of sixteen onthat day as he saw Yama,the lord of death approaching him, the boy ran to lord Mukunda at Thirunavaya. but he was instructed to approach Sree Mahadeva at triprangode. as Markandeya ran for his life.On the way to Triprangode temple there was a huge banyan tree that stood by making difficulty to enter into the temple. At the time he reached there surprisingly the tree separated into two parts and then he could easily enter into temple. Markandeya hugged the Shiva Lingam and requested Lord Shiva to protect him from Yama. Yama threw his rope to tie the boy up but the rope went round the idol of lord Shiva. At a blow, the Shiva Lingam burst open with a thundering roar and a majestic, fiery form of Lord Shiva appeared out of the blazing light. Lord Shiva was very anger and asked whether Yama has these much courage to encircle the Shiva Lingam with his noose, Shiva struck down Yama with his Trident (trishool), and Yama was no more. Markandeya was escaped from death. Shiva blessed Markandeya with eternal life and proclaimed that he shall remain forever as a sixteen-year-old sage.(*The assembly of Devas, who had witnessed all these, begged Shiva to revive Yama. Otherwise there will be a situation in the world with people live long without death. This would put unnecessary burden on the earth. Shiva then revived Yama, and declared that His devotees were forever to be spared from the noose of Yama.) Since that day, the fiery form of Shiva that appeared to save the boy-sage Markandeya is called Kalasamhara Murti]
enraged by this lord Shiva killed Yama and saved Markandeya.the lord then washed himself and his weapon in the pond on the southern side and enshrined himself inthe present sanctum sanctorrum.as the lord is believed to have taken three steps after killing Yama Shiva lingas are consecreated at three places in the temple. A Brahmin boy saw the lord wshing himself in the pond and offerd his help.the lord accepted his help and instruceted to perform abhishekam(pouring water on the deity)in the sanctum sanctorum using the conch.the descndents of the boy belonging to kalpuzha Nambootiri family became the thanthris (chief priests)of the temple.
the temple was managed by the vettath royal family and later by the zamorin raja of kozhikode.even today This temple is now under the governership of the zamothiri raja calicut ( the zamorin raja is the chief tustee of the temple).In the two storied sanctum sanctorum,lord Shiva is consecrated facing west as the presiding deity.main offerings are mruthyanjayahoma. sangabhishekam and dhara.devotees are expected to get salvation from sins and eternity in life by offering mruthynjayahoma to lord Shiva.
*Since the save of his pious markedaya after killing of Yama devan . here it is believed that lord Shiva killed kala(Yaman-death god) and saved Markandeya*. it is also believed that Shiva cleaned the thrisula,the weapon used to kill kala from the pond near by .This pond is still preserved in memmory of the incident .A very interesting feature of this temple is that the pond here changes colour(blood-red colour) every shivarathri day.
